On December the 14th of 2018, the British judicial system has decided the demise of an Irish comrade, carrying a flag that commemorates the Irish struggle for national liberation is punishable by three years of prison.

Sean Carlin, an activist for the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), a Marxist Leninist party mainly influenced by historical Irish revolutionaries like James Connolly, has been arrested by a heavily armed police squad in Belfast on November 2nd. Because of British anti terrorist laws, methodologically and strategically similar to the state of emergency that has been applied in France, the fact that comrade Carlin has been carrying a flag that pays tribute to Belfast freedom fighters of the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army), during a demonstration commemorating the Easter Rise of 1916, automatically makes him a member of a so-called terrorist organisation. He is currently imprisonned for three years with two years of probation.

This judicial insanity enacted by the British bourgeois state is reminescent of the historical Irish struggle and the state’s current repressive goals. The IRSP has had an important activity during the Troubles (1968-1998), notably through its paramilitary organisation INLA, as one of the most efficient republican force against the fascist loyalist militias and the bourgeois states of Ulster and the pro-treaty Republic. If the internal conflicts between the republican paramilitary organisations have been frequent, culminating in the murder of founding member of IRSP/INLA Seamus Costello by a member of the OIRA, the IRSP have pointed out a major development in the political line of the Irish revolutionary war, the synthesis of the class struggle in Ireland and the question of national liberation. It was a necessary step while other major organisations like the ephemerous OIRA (Official IRA) deemed to concentrate on the question of class struggle while having a short view of the national question, while the more influential PIRA (Provisional IRA) was highly implicated in the national liberation movement while having a very relative class analysis of the Irish struggle. All of those paramilitary organisations have been disarmed ever since, some have been integrated into the parliementary political front with a reformist agenda (the PIRA being disbanded by the Sinn Fein in 2005 and the OIRA abandoning the revolutionary process in 1972 for parliementary revisionist action throught the Workers Party of Ireland), other members of PIRA have been completely dispersed in many small highly clandestine groups, the IRSP is still maintaining their revolutionary core, against imperialists and the national bourgeoisie. Reformism and parliamentary politics is not an acceptable path for the liberation of the Irish working class. The IRSP is fighting for a revolutionary proletarian state, chasing out the British invader by force and unifying all workers of Ireland, north and south.

With this revolutionary character, the IRSP is a splinter in the hegemony of the imperial machinery and is automatically a target for the two bourgeois states of Ireland, all shots are allowed. Sean Carlin, with many other republican socialists, is a political prisoner, crushed by a judicial bulldozer that applies extensible laws to repress any form of threat to its hegemony. The British state is horrified by a simple flag, not only they repress any form of struggle, they want to erase the memory of those who have fallen to pursue this struggle. But historically, when the British state didn’t commit mass murder themselves like on the infamous Bloody Sunday, they never hesitated to give military equipments and bombs to protestant fascist militias loyal to the crown, fascist groups that are still to this day assaulting and murdering Catholic civillians in the streets from Belfast to Derry. In addition to the brutal incarceration of Comrade Carlin, the police have been harassing the IRSP for the past years on multiple occasions, and the imperialist media were akin to accuse the party of criminal activities.

During a visit in Brittany a while ago, Carlin expressed the solidarity of Irish comrades to Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, the oldest political prisoner of europe, still incarcerated in France to this day, it is a tragedy to see Sean Carlin suffering a similar demise on the latter days of 2018.

We, as the Unité Communiste de Lyon (Communist Unity of Lyon) express our indefectible solidarity to Comrade Sean Carlin and to the IRSP, alongside all political prisoners arrested for their struggle against the fascist beast and the Imperial forces of the world.

Long live the liberation of the oppressed nations, long live the workers of the world, and long live Communism!
